In the second half of the eighteenth century the little princess of Anhalt-Zerbst, later to be known as Catherine the Great, absolute sovereign of Russia, began to form a fabulous art collection at the residence of the Czars, the lavish Winter Palace on the banks of the Neva River in St. Petersburg. Diderot, D'Alembert and Voltaire, among many literary and philosophy celebrities of that period, were more than willing to publicly praise Catherine the Great for her patronage of the arts, her magnificent art collection and her devoted protection of the philosophers of the time.

The venerable Winter Palace of the czars and its successive enlargements was transformed over time in the State Hermitage Museum which harbours more than 3 million great works of art and numismatic collections, archaeological and decorative arts, etc. It is now considered, next to the Prado museum, one of the essential art galleries in the world which comprehensively convey the magnitude of universal knowledge in the realms of culture and art.

The temporary exhibition of a total of 170 works of art from the collection of the Hermitage State Museum hosted by the Prado Museum, will undoubtedly become the most impressive cultural event of the winter season 2011/2012 in Madrid.
The Madrid Museum Tours team will unfold in their private tours, the history and secrets behind the art treasures of the Hermitage State Museum in order to maximize the enjoyment of such unparalleled exhibit.
Our private tours will establish an easy to understand, highly coherent and enthralling narrative and thematic thread between the masterpieces exhibited. It will cover the classic masterpieces of Caravaggio, Rembrandt and Canova, to name just a few, and will also run through the extraordinary sketches of Ingres and Dürer, among others. We will submerge ourselves into the wonderful impressionist paintings of Monet, Renoir and Gauguin, not forgetting the “dear enemies”, Picasso and Matisse. Last but not least, we will enjoy the pinnacle of contemporary Russian pictorial genius represented by the founder of the Suprematist movement, Kazimir Malevich (Black Square) and by Composition VI, a jewel of abstract painting by Wassily Kandinsky.
